How to Start a Blog After 50: The Tortoise Was Right

If you looked at my visitor count from last Tuesday, you probably wouldn’t see a “digital revolution” in the making. In fact, if I were chasing viral trends or overnight success, I might have hung it up by Wednesday morning. But here’s the thing when you start a blog after 50: we aren’t here for the sprint.

At 63, I’ve been around the internet block more than a few times. I know that the “trudge” isn’t a sign of failure; it’s the sound of progress. While the world celebrates the “hare” and their 24-hour viral sensations, I’m putting my money on the tortoise. Consistency is the only metric that truly wins the long race of content creation.

This week, the numbers didn’t move much. But I did. I showed up, I wrote, and I’m one step closer to the big dream I shared two weeks ago. If you’re feeling like the pace is slow, remember that the tortoise didn’t just finish the race, he won it.

So Why Am I Still Doing This?

I have this urge to create. I enjoy writing and I enjoy blogging. I enjoy helping others.

Content creation for me is just something that I do. It must be in my DNA, it’s in my blood. I can remember back in the early days of the internet and the webpages I created.

Those were the days that you created webpages in HTML. You coded them in notepad and uploaded it to your site. There were no fancy themes or plugins. It was just hard-coded HTML.

Today we have themes and plugins that make creating a website easy.

How to Start a Blog After 50: Finding Your Momentum

How to start a blog after 50 is about getting out there and creating the content that you enjoy. You need to select a topic that keeps you excited everyday. Something that you can talk about and not get tired. For me, it’s blogging and creating engaging content that is helpful to others.

There are plenty of free sites to start with such as wordpress.com or wix.com. So if blogging is something you want to do, then the door is wide open with these simple and easy free sites.

For those creators that want to create videos, there’s Instagram and YouTube. Very popular sites for video creators. That’s the next piece I want to tackle, creating helpful videos. More about that later.

But the point I want to make in this post is that whatever content creation path you want to take, it’s the constant posting that creates the momentum. I really hope this doesn’t detract from your interest, but 99% of us will not get a post or video or anything else go viral overnight.

It takes time.

It takes consistency.

It takes determination to push through those days when the only people hitting your site are you loved ones (and that is only when you ask them 🙃) and spammers.

If content creation is in your blood, then grab one of those free sites and start blogging.

If content creation is your blood, then grab you phone and make a video and upload it to Instagram or YouTube.

The hardest part of getting into the world of content creation is starting. Pull out your keyboard. Grab your phone.

But remember it’s the tortoise that won the race, not the hare.

You can do this!!
