What to Do When Others Tell You, You Can’t

January 1, 2014 0 Comments

The New Year is upon us and it is the time when we start making goals for the New Year. Sometimes we set goals that are a little too farfetched and that we know we can’t achieve. That happens to all of us, but what do you do when someone tells you that you cannot achieve a goal that is part of your dream? Why do you do when people tell you things that get you doubting yourself? Keep reading and I’ll give you a couple helpful tips.

Keep a Positive Attitude
Attitude is everything. You must believe in yourself in order to achieve your goal. There will be days when you think to yourself that you are on the right track and can do this. There will also be days when you look in the mirror and think to yourself, “What am I doing?” I know because I’ve been there. Keep your head up and keep pushing toward your end goal. Whether you are trying to run your first 5k run or are trying to get your business going online, it’s your attitude that matters most. Positive thoughts bring positive results.

Start With Micro Goals
Every journey starts with a single step and your journey to your goal requires the same. Break down your goal into smaller micro goals. This will be easier to manage and reaching these micro goals will keep your momentum going. Let’s say your goal is to make a living as a writer, simple enough. Now let’s break it down into smaller steps, such as:
– Start blog and drive traffic to your site.
– Find a website that accepts guest bloggers.
– Find a guest post on blogs that are more popular.
– You can take it from there…
Keeping your steps small will help you achieve your end goal. Remember this will not happen overnight; it may take a month, a year, or more depending on what you final goal is.

Track Your Progress
Write down you progress and track it. Keep a calendar with notes on your activities and progress. Write down what works and what did not and highlight them. Keep the calendar, journal, or a small notebook with you. When you have an idea or need to record some fact or figure, it will be handy. I keep a small 4 1/2 inch by 3 1/4 inch notebook with me whenever I am out. I also use a weekly/monthly planner to track my progress, write down ideas, and record other social media stuff.

Surround Yourself With Positive People
Last but absolutely not least, surround yourself with people that have positive attitudes. There are many different people out there in the world and I’m sure you have noticed the difference. There are people that tell you “you can’t do that” or “that’s impossible” or better yet “that’s too hard, I’d never do that.” What does that tell you about the person who says that? Start surrounding yourself with people on the other side of the spectrum, those that say, “You can do it” or better yet after you accomplish your goal, “I knew you could do it!” Surrounding yourself with positive people will keep you in a positive frame of mind.

The people that tell you that you can’t do something are the people that can’t do it themselves. Leave their negative comments off to the side and keep pressing to reach your goals. Here is your mantra for this year, “Positive thought bring positive results.”

You can do it. I know you can.
To your success.
