Five Cold Calling Tips

Cold calling tips.

Cold calling is a great way to generate leads.

The fear of rejection stops many people from living their dream. As an entrepreneur, you have to put yourself out there in order to grow your business. There is no Field of Dreams in entrepreneurship, “If you build it they will not necessarily come.” Gain new business by picking up the phone and making those phone calls that you know you should make, but are too nervous to do. Don’t let  fear stop you from making those calls.

Follow these five tips to make your first cold calls much easier.

  1. Gather the business phone numbers.
Since no one really uses the yellow pages any more, I like to use thomasnet.com and manta.com to gather my information. These sites are great resources for the information you need about your potential prospect.
  2. Practice your spiel.
Stand in front of the mirror and work on your cold call spiel. Call you friends to practice your calling technique on them. Practice…
  3. Take a deep breath and make the phone calls.
Find a quiet spot where you can concentrate on your calls. It’s not as bad as it seems.
  4. The money is in the follow-up. Once you have made contact with a prospect and they seem to be interested in your service or product, send a follow up email thanking them for their time. Do not make it a lengthy sales pitch. Scratch that, DO NOT make it a sales pitch at all.
  5. Keep track of your calls.
Keep track of your call with an excel spreadsheet or by using CRM software. There are several trial/free versions in which to choose. I like the offering from capsulecrm.com.

I hope these tips help you when you finally decide to make those cold calls. It tough, but it does get easier once you make those initial calls. Gather some phone numbers. Then practice your spiel, I know that in no-time, you will cold calling like a pro.

To your success
